Spear and Jackson - spade

Consumer benefits through technical innovation

Spear and Jackson required innovation in its digging tools range to excite a market that had seen no significant changes for over a hundred years.

We took a ‘user centred’ design approach, and carried out observational research to discover problems experienced by two target groups - trade users and DIYers.

The team proposed that if a way could be found to reduce jarring forces transmitted through conventional handles when striking hard ground or hidden debris it would provide genuine benefits in user comfort, safety and performance.

We applied ergonomic principles to the digging action and developed a patented active shock absorbing mechanism to reduce the likelihood of wrist injuries.

An ‘oversized’ handle was also designed to enable the user to use alternative grip positions, including two handed operation, to further improve comfort and reduce potential injuries.
